The Municipality of Marondera is mulling turning a golf course into a residential area in a move that has rattled golfers though residents have welcomed the idea.
The golf course is located along Harare-Mutare highway and has been attracting golfers from across the country.
Some of the golfers who attended a budget consultative meeting at council chambers recently asked the town management on the way to go as far as the change of land use is concerned.
Marondera Town Planner Never Besa however said council identified an alternative place in Rufaro Longlands, about 10km from the CBD.
“According to the1986 masterplan plan, the golf course area was reserved for the CBD extension.
“This therefore means that the space will be turned onto commercial stands. However, we have identified a place in Rufaro where a new golf course can be established,” he said.
The construction of a golf course is expensive and requires a lot of expertise which is seldom found in the country
However, the move by council to turn the golf course into commercial stands has been welcomed by residents who some of them want a chunk of the land for residential stands.
Marondera Residents Association (MARA) has been nagging the municipality to unveil land for stands following a failed land invasion near the golf course.
