Lawlessness at Marondera Bus Terminus has deprived council a lot of money after space barons took over any opening and renting out small portions to vendors.
Recently council destroyed some of the illegal structures only to find more illegal structures being erected at the bus terminus the following day without their approval.
The matter was deliberated on Wednesday during a full council meeting where councillors said politicians and top government officials in Marondera are behind the sprouting of illegal structures at the major rank where they are renting in foreign currency.
The area Councillor Saizi Vilela, said the lawlessness has resulted in council losing revenue to space barons.
“The lawlessness at the rank is making council lose a lot of money. The space barons are charging US$120 per cabin. This week we destroyed the illegal structures and the next day we found some people erecting some structures again. Who are those people?
“The vehicle clamping team is also failing to collect money from parking spaces due to the influx of money changers who are parking their vehicles everywhere,” he said.
Marondera Mayor Chengetai Murowa said all illegal structures should be removed with immediate effect.
“We have resolved that all the illegal structures at the bus terminus be removed. The area is the face of the town and we are not happy with whoever is behind allocation of vending space. We are here to implement the Smart City concept hence the removal of all illegal structures at the rank,” he said.
The Marondera Bus Terminus has been taken over by vendors who have erected cabins while forex dealers are also operating in and around the area.
