The Marondera business community is in a state of shock following the reviewing of licence fees that have seen some businesses being charged a whopping $45 000 up from $1300 contrary to budget demands.
There was chaos at the council chambers as the business community demanded answers from council on what went wrong on the licence issue that saw people being ordered to pay more than 1000% increased fees.
Marondera Mayor Chengetai Murowa told the gathering that something went wrong with the council management to come up with such astronomical figures.
“We are totally against this. We are shocked to learn of these new figures. This is not what was in the budget. We need to take this up so that we come up with a solution. This is wrong and we must correct this. We are all shocked about what really transpired,” he said.
In the meeting, council management including town clerk Josiah Musuwo and chamber secretary Runashe Nyamuzihwa were absent from the meeting while the official from the Finance Director offices had left the chambers.
Finance committee chairperson Mubaiwa Dzvuke said they are not aware of the new exorbitant licence fees saying they will take the matter up with council management.
“I am also shocked, this is not what was approved. This is not the budget that went to the Local Governance ministry. After scrutinising it, I realised that they used a new model called Promac hence the inflation,” he said.
However, the business community dismissed the hiked licence fees and ordered council to put its house in order.
