The political frictions arising from leadership contests in the opposition MDC have intensified in Marondera leading to physical altercations between Councilors during Council business.
Recently Clr Simbarashe Nyahuye, suspected by fellow Councilors of aligning with Douglas Mwonzora, was involved in an altercation with another Councilor Charles Ngwena.
Nyahuye is being haunted by the majority of the Nelson Chamisa led MDC-A Councilors accusing him of being alligned to the Mwonzora faction which has been recalling those aligning with Chamisa.
According to court papers, on August 12, Nyahuye clashed with Ngwena at council chambers resulting in an altercation.
The matter was reported at Marondera Central resulting in Nyahuye’s arrest and he has since been charged with assault.
Nyahuye has however pleaded not guilty to the charges saying his arrest was politically motivated and accused Ngwena of cooking up assault charges.
In a separate incident, there was drama at Council chambers during the last full council meeting after Ngwena and Nyahuye again exchanged harsh words resulting in proceedings being disturbed.
Ngwena asked Mayor Chengetai Murowa not to consider Nyahuye’s contributions since he is anti-Chamisa.
“Your worship, Nyahuye is not supposed to contribute anything in this chamber, this council is for Chamisa, not Mwonzora, ” said Ngwena.
This irked Nyahuye who responded by reminding Ngwena that he was an elected councillor hence he had a right to be in the chambers.
The clash was then dealt with by Murowa who ordered the two out of the chambers and told them to come back after settling their differences.
The factional fights however have angered resident association leaders who said councillors should resolve their misunderstandings at their party offices not at council chambers.
