One generic idea sold by the opposition MDC Alliance is the almost automatic and swift birth of a new dawn of principled leadership, accountability and transparency as soon as their party takes over power.
This change is supposed to be instantaneous, a sudden explosion into existence of a cultured political leadership that will be separated from the feudal wealth extractors presently siphoning life out of the country.
Thus Chamisa’s speeches have been laced with hard to believe grandiose visions (remember the spaghetti roads) and other un-Zimbabwean creations that freak out any ‘practical’ person who has survived thus far under ZANU PF’s wave of bush bakeries, potholed roads and commissioned bins.
It’s almost as if Chamisa has a Big Bang wand that will explode a new reality into existence if the opposition, the only legitimate one, wins power.
However events on the ground, especially the City Councils where his party controls, are revealing that Chamisa’s supposed Big Bang theory, to usher Zimbabwe onto a new cosmic existence may not be realistic.
A round of recent events at the opposition controlled Harare City Council are showing that whilst Chamisa, untainted as he personally is, may hold and believe in the deity-like powers of his party winning and changing things, his compatriots are not of the same mindset or character.
The Harare Mayor, fresh from warning land barons to cease selling land illegally, has been arrested himself on accusations of criminal abuse of office.
Six other Councilors, including the Chairperson of the Housing Committee, Hammy Madzingira, have also been arrested on allegations of corruption.
In Marondera the opposition Councilors have also been implicated, together with other ZANU PF politicians, in an elitist scam where they have benefitted stands
Across the country plenty other opposition leaders have been caught up in accusations of shady activities.
Room can be given to allegations of weaponized law by the ruling party seeking to fight the opposition through false veneers of legality but other independent organisations have accused opposition Councilors of criminal activities.
The Combined Harare Residents Trust, Wetlands Trust, Harare Residents Trust and many others have come up against Harare Councilors accusing them of illegal activities and calling for investigations.
The summation from all this is the fact that whatever new cosmos Chamisa is brewing on the sidelines, ready to bang it into existence may not be anything but rhetoric.
His Big Bang wand will not explode into existence any new accountable and corrupt-free Zimbabwe with politicians behaving like most of these Councilors.
What the situation is revealing is that the country does not need a Big Bang that unleashes a new crop of politicians as most of them will simply behave like the old vultures nitpicking flesh off the carcass of the country.
Whereas the almost ‘scientific’ Big Bang move envisaged by Chamisa sounds novel and exciting with its large ensembles of new politicians marching in to take over power, what the country needs is actually a rebaptism into the basic ethics of leadership through strengthened institutions and reforms.
Without those changes any new Big Bang, unleashing new politicians into office will not work wonders for the country. All we will see are the same old crimes being perpetrated by new suits and new slogans.
The crimes being done at Town House should sound a warning that the cessation of corruption and unaccountability in positions of power won’t come with new political faces but stronger, reformed and independent institutions.
