A total of 5 councillors, including Mayor Chengetai Murowa, were recently recalled by the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T accusing them of being aligned to MDC-Alliance’s leader Nelson Chamisa.
Murowa has since been replaced by Simbarashe Nyahuye (Ward 2) an MDC-T candidate who got four votes against MDC-Alliance’s candidate Bornface Tagwirei who polled three votes.
Below are some of the recalled councillors and MDC-Alliance politicians sentiments after the purge.
Mayor: Chengetai Murova
“I have been recalled by Thokozani Khupe because I chose to stand loyal with the masses who voted for me and refused to sell out. I choose to remain loyal to the masses. When you casted your vote you were clear on the party you voted for.
“Therefore it will be a great betrayal for me to take your vote and give to someone else. I will never emulate Judas Iscariot. Let me be clear that my love for the community I serve and the people in general has not changed and I will continue contribute towards the development of our community.
“Let’s remain united and solid for us to go forward. We are a people together.I remain loyal to the MDC Alliance that deployed me under the leadership of Advocate Nelson Chamisa.
Ward 11 councillor: Sizemark Vilela
“I will never betray the will of the people for money. The people know what they want, they know who they voted for. I would want to tender my gratitude for the undistinguished love and support for the two years we have worked together to better our Marondera town.
“I will remain focused and never move an inch from giving the Marondera people what I am supposed to be giving.
Ward 5 councillor: Misheck Manyere
“I received a letter of recall from Thokozani Khupe and Douglas Mwonzora. The reason for my recall is because I chose to stand by our leader Nelson Chamisa. I thank the Ward 5 residents for entrusting me with your votes and defeating both Zanu PF and MDC-T during the 2018 elections.
“I will continue working with you as a shadow councillor until by-elections are held. Your stolen vote shall speak loudly.
Ward 4 councillor: Charles Ngwena
I was elected as a councillor and I remain one.The residents know their councillors and nothing can change that.
Marondera Central MP: Caston Matewu
I want to sincerely apologise for what is happening in the Council, but like I have always said Marondera is not divorced from the country and this is happening across all towns.
“ZANU PF is using Khupe to destroy our party MDC Alliance led by President Nelson Chamisa, the party which you overwhelmingly voted in 2018. But this shall come to pass.
“You can never put a good man down. As your MP I will stick to the mandate you gave me and I won’t deviate from President Chamisa he will always remain my President. We shall restore order in our Party for the benefit of residents. The struggle for a better Marondera and indeed Zimbabwe continues.
