The poor performance by the country’s economy has forced Marondera Municipality to make a target of just ZWL$100 000 under this years Mayors Christmas Cheer Fund.
Last year, the local authority had a target of US$50 000.
Chamber Secretary Rinashe Nyamuzihwa explained that the unfavourable business environment currently prevailing in the country has had a big knock on this years event.
“To begin with, we have suspended the official launch of the Mayors Christmas Cheer Fund this year which is normally characterized by a fundraising dinner where invited guests make donations or pledges towards the event” ,said Nyamuzihwa.
He however, added that experience has taught them that most people who make pledges do not fulfil them and it is very cumbersome to make follow ups of such pledges because the people will be very evasive.
“Imagine that we would have hired a venue mostly at our local hotel and provided all the invited guests with an expensive meal say at a total cost of ZWL$10 000, but we end up raising just ZWL$4 000”, she added.
He said that most people attended the fundraising dinner for the free meal, and not to donate anything.
He also said that they are in the process of approaching their traditional sponsors who are promising to support the event whose proceeds will be channelled towards charity by the Mayor of Marondera.
“We hope by February next year we would have reached our target of ZWL$100 000, but we are not going the traditional way of inviting people for a free meal this year”, she said.
