At least three rural district councils in Mashonaland East Province are set to be granted town status.
This follows a survey which showed that Chivhu, Murehwa and Mutoko are expanding.
Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo revealed the news.
“We observed that there is only one town in the whole of Mashonaland East Province which is Marondera.
“We have councils which are expanding namely Chivhu, Murehwa and Mutoko and can be granted town status,” he said.
“After carrying out a survey and making recommendations on areas which are growing, the President has final say on that, he said”
According to a 2019 Zimbabwe Infrastructure Report Chivhu has 121,663 people.
Murehwa has 247,054 and Mutoko has 197 376.
The three districts have agro-based economies with lot of subsistence farming.
