Service delivery has continued suffering as Councilors from MDC Alliance and MDC-T are now perpetually involved in power brawls at Marondera Town House.
So serious is the problem that a stroll around the affected wards reveal the sad state of the affairs.
The most affected area is Ward 1 in Dombotombo which was in the hands of Chengetai Murowa who was recalled by the Douglas Mwonzora faction on allegations that he was aligned to Nelson Chamisa’s camp.
Uncollected garbage is the order of the day, whilst grass is growing uncontrollably, both in the suburb and at the shopping centre, which happens to be the oldest and the busiest in Marondera.
Several residents in the area spoken to by Marondera Open Council revealed that service delivery in their area has plummeted to unprecedented levels ever since councillors were recalled without being replaced.
Residents Have Nowhere to Take Grievances
“We do not know where to take our grievances to.
Our councillors were recalled and if we go to municipality offices in town we do not know which office is best placed to attend to our concerns, as the Town Clerk says he does not attend to individual grievances,” said 78-year-old Tarusenga Muhwandavaka who resides along Manda Street near Dombotombo shopping centre.
He said it is also worrying that there is no specific department at town house that deals with residents’ concerns adding that it is now through the grace of the Lord that no cholera cases have been reported in the area.
The residents added that with fruits such as mangoes in abundant supply, it is only a matter of time before such cases are recorded in the area.
In another interview Murova, the former mayor, accused the current Mayor, Simbarashe Nyahuye of sleeping on duty whilst service delivery deteriorates.
Mind Your Business as MDC-Alliance
He said all efforts to engage him have yielded nothing as he told him to mind his own business as a member of MDC-Alliance.
“Ever since we were recalled from council, the six wards whose councillors were recalled now resemble orphans. In fact, they are now orphaned wards as no one takes care of them,” said Murova.
He said it is ironic that the seating mayor, who resides in the same vicinity and also uses Dombotombo Shopping Centre as his service centre, can afford to neglect the area because of politics, or because it is not in his ward.
He further alleged that it is a pity that rates have skyrocketed whilst residents fail to get value for their money.
My Plate is Full
When reached for comment, Cllr Nyahuye, the seating mayor, said he has a full plate in front of him as the whole town looks up to him for service delivery.
“As the mayor, my job is to play an oversight role, and I don’t focus on a particular ward, but all the wards,” he said.
He further defended himself saying most council equipment has become obsolete hence the poor service delivery.
Late last year MDC-T recalled six councillors it accused of taking sides with MDC-Alliance who include Cllr Chengetai Murova (Ward 1), Cllr Boniface Tagwirei (Ward 3), Cllr Charles Ngwena (Ward 4), Cllr Misheck Manyere (Ward 5) Cllr Wonder Siriya (Ward 6) and Cllr Size Vilela (Ward 11).
